Laser tools, and laser technology in general, used to be very expensive. But they have come way down in price, making laser tools very affordable for the home workman.
We present below two laser devices that we have used in recent years... and love them... laser measuring devices ("tape measure") and laser levelers.
Both tools are highly accurate and so easy to use, we recommend them for your shop.
I have an older style Kit by Craftsman, which contains both items... love this thing!
It is called the Craftsman Laser Measuring and Leveling Tool Kit.
The laser measuring tool ("laser tape measure") can measure from 2'-50' distances, and has a built in function which can accurately calculate square and cubic feet area from the line dimensions.
You simply hold the butt of the tool against the wall, level it with the 2 bubble vials, and hit "READ" to get your accurate measurement to the far wall.
Here's how easy it is to use the laser measuring tool:
A line laser contains diodes that project visible beams of light. This light passes through a focusing lens and prism, which causes it to fan out along a single plane. When the fan of light hits an object, it appears as a line.
The Laser Level included in my kit projects a bright red laser line, either horizontally or vertically. No more pencil marks on the wall or messy chalk lines!
The horizontal line is useful, for example, for hanging several pictures level and at the same exact height. Vertical lines can help with installing cabinets or to keep framing, like a door jamb, plumb (straight up and down).
Most laser levels can be hand-held, wall-mounted or affixed to a tripod.
Here's a quick video showing how the laser leveler works:
Although in searching around the internet for my exact kit, I found a few left on eBay or Sears Outlets, I don't think it is marketed by Sears any more.
We present below laser tools which have consistently gotten high marks from independent reviewers:
