Who knew that there were so many different types of watches? With fewer and fewer people wearing watches over the past few years, many people find it difficult to understand the different types of watches that are available when choosing a watch for themselves or for someone else.
In order to make understanding watches easier, we thought it might be helpful to give a brief description of the various different types of watches.

Different Types of Watches Available to Own
Wrist Watch
A wrist watch is any type of watch that goes around the wrist with metal, leather, or any other type of band.
This is a basic term for any watch that goes around the wrist, even those that may be considered to be somewhat different type of watch.
You can purchase a wrist watch for men, women, and various age children. The Men’s big face watch is currently one of the popular types of wrist watches sold.

A bracelet watch is a type of wrist watch that usually has the face of the watch as an integral part of the bracelet. (Meaning it is built into the band.)
Big face watches for ladies may come in a standard wrist watch style, a bracelet watch or some other types of watches.
Necklace Watch
A necklace watch is a small timepiece that is designed to be worn on a chain around the neck.
Pin Watch
Not extremely popular in today’s society, a pin watch is a watch attached to pin and worn on a front of blouse, dress, or jacket. Most Pin watches are highly decorative as well as functional.
Nurses wear these all the time, so put that on your list of Christmas gifts if you have a nurse in the family.

Pocket Watch
A pocket watch is designed to be worn in a pocket (some suits have small watch pockets made especially for these watches.)
Pocket watches normally have a cover and a chain to attach the watch to clothing to keep it from getting lost if it falls from the pocket.
Aviator Watch
Aviator watches are multifunctional – they have different features such as stop watch, calendar, dual time zones and more.
Big Face Watch
A big face watch is a watch that has a large face that covers a good portion of the wrist and normally has large numbers that are easy to read even at a glance.
Waterproof Watch
There is really no such thing as actual waterproof watch, so if you are looking for the best waterproof watch for kids you are sure to be slightly disappointed.
However, there are water resistant watches and these watches are made to come in contact with water.
There is a test that is done to determine just how water resistant a watch may be, with divers watches going under several rigorous tests.
Here is one way to determine just how much water a water resistant watch can take:
- 30M to 50M – These watches can take only low water exposure, for instance the amount of water that would splash on the wrist while washing your hands.
- 100M – This means that your watch should still continue to tick even if worn for casual water sports or in the shower.
- 200M – This type of watch is designed for those who engage in professional water sports and can withstand being in a moderate depth of water for longer periods of time.
- Divers Watches – Divers watches are usually rated from 200M (snorkeling watches) to over 1000 meters. These watches are the closest thing to a waterproof watch you can find.
Chronograph Watch
This is simply a watch that functions as stop watch. Many times watches may be advertised as a wrist watch or pocket watch with chronograph features.

Analog Watch
An analog watch uses Roman Numerals or regular number arranged in a circle around the face of the watch with the 12 being at the top and the 6 being at the bottom of the circle.
Digital Watch
A digital watch displays the time in numbers across the face of the watch, first with the hour followed by the minutes.
For example: three fifteen would be displayed 3:15 the number is often followed by either am or pm.
As stated before, there are several combinations of these watches usually falling under the most common type.
For instance, a wrist watch can be listed with chronograph, water resistant and analog features and still be called a wrist watch.
A wrist watch designed specifically for divers may simply be listed as a Divers or Diving watch and may have digital and chronograph listed under its features, indicating that it is really all four type of watches rolled into one.
The simplest way of finding the right watch for you is to choose whether you are looking for a wrist watch, a pocket watch, a necklace watch or some other style and then look for the features that combine the different features for the other types of watches that you like the best and want in your watch.
