What Should I Look For?

Resolution


Resolution means how many pixels or tiny specks are in a display. Higher resolution provides much clearer and sharper images, with better contrast and detail.

Full High Definition (like your HDTV) is decent, with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution.

27-inch or bigger monitors (Wide Quad HD or WQHD) can have up to 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. Better picture!

4K displays at an astounding 3,840 x 2,160 resolution. 

*Don't forget that higher resolution at these levels requires a seriously powerful graphics card. You must have both; a great monitor and a substantial GPU, in order to enjoy PC games as they were intended.

We recommend for GPU: AMD Radeon RX-5700 or Nvidia GTX-1060, or better.

Refresh Rate

Refresh Rate= How many times per second a monitor is capable of re-displaying the image.

A slow refresh rate can mean flickering or tearing (2 frames of video are shown together in a single frame, causing a "torn" effect.)

A 60Hz (hertz) refresh rate was the standard for many years; and most LCDs still refresh at that rate.

Look for a monitor with a 120Hz or higher refresh rate; this is pretty much required for active 3D technology.

Note: with 4k, you have to sacrifice some refresh capability in order to enjoy the sharper, more detailed super high-resolution image.

Ultra-wide Monitor

Bigger is better when it comes to gaming monitors!

If you are ready to match a new monitor to your upgraded gaming PC, then some tips:

  • We suggest a minimum of 27-inch HD screen for decent game viewing. However, if you go with a 1080p monitor, don't get a screen bigger than 24-inches.
  • A 30-inch or bigger 4K or UHD monitor can deliver an awesome 3,840-by-2,160 resolution!
  • 34-inch and up to 38" video monitors are available; some with curved screens.


Aspect ratio: Is the width by height of the screen. Older monitors were more square, at an aspect ratio of 4:3; modern screens are usually 16:9; and the latest and greatest are the Ultra Wides, which carry an aspect of 21:9.
