How My Little Pony Evolved – In the Beginning
The first My Little Pony was introduced in 1981 and this line of popular toys marketed mainly to little girls was first launched in 1983.
These ponies lack the defined shape of real horses, and featured colorful bodies and manes of soft hair that could be brushed or combed with miniature combs and brushes.
Each pony also bears a special mark on one or both of its flanks that has come to be known as a “cutie” mark.
The original line of ponies was known as earth ponies and sometimes rainbow ponies because they came in every color of the rainbow.
They were instantly popular with many young girls, because most of the figurine type toys at that time were geared towards the male market and here was something that allowed little girls to join in fantasy play with friends.
The original toy line proved to be so popular that it ran from 1983-1995 both in America and other countries as well.
This toy inspired a number of animated specials, a feature length film and 4 animated series all centered on the adventures of these brightly colored ponies and the seemingly magical world they inhabited.
Further more, Hasbro wanting to take full advantage of these little horses produced or licensed a number of other products including lunch boxes, backpacks and several other items even clothing inspired by and featuring these ponies.
A Dip and a Surge
After 1995 the My little ponies seem to take a small dip in popularity.
But in 2010 their popularity surged to a new high due the introduction of the 4th generation of My little ponies and a new 2010 animated series that put these toys back into the spotlight.
One of the reason why My Little Pony has evolved to become so popular with kids is that this toy had been revamped to appeal to new markets as one group of children grow up and another takes their place .
Another reason for the popularity of these toys is that there always seems to be a new pony to offer.
Following the Earth Ponies, there came the Pegasus ponies, Unicorn ponies, Flutter Ponies and Sea Ponies.
There are both adult ponies and foals and a variety of accessories, so that children can build their own little fantasy world with their own My Little Pony or ponies as the inhabitants.
As long as these ponies continue to touch the hearts and the imagination of young children, this toy will continue to remain popular for generations to come.
